TangledUpInPlaid

I like the way plaids emerge from the technology of weaving, as opposed to being patterns applied to fabric using the technology of printing.  The vertical and horizontal threads (warp and weft) are both solid colors.  Within these constraints, there are all sorts of plaids and stripes and windowpanes.

Well, now.  My loom is digital and I’m weaving virtual thread.  Maybe I can relax the constraints slightly and open up some new possibilities.  Here my horizontal threads are solid colors, while my vertical threads are multicolored.  The vertical threads go either from blue to cyan (foreground) or from yellow to red (background).  The horizontal threads are solid colors, but are taken from the same gradients, so that the weave disappears in the intersections of like colors.

The result is a pattern that appears to be woven.  For example, if you look where blue crosses yellow, you can see the weave.  At the same time, it’s woven out of impossible thread, so the pattern is different from anything that could actually be woven.
